I have a 2001 Ranger 4X4 4.0 and am trying to replace the fuel filter without any luck. At first I tried using the special tool the guy at the auto parts store sold me and discovered that it didn't work and decided to search on this forum. when I discovered they changed it in 2001. The new ones have a a green and orange (maybe red) ring on the fittings on the tank side and a plastic clip on the engine side. The post that I read on the forum stated to push on the ring with a flat head screwdriver. I tried pushing on the green ring but it still didn't budge. Could I have screwed it up trying to get it off with the tool? the poster didn't state which direction to push. and what about the front fitting? I'm almost afraid to touch it now.
These little jewels are sometimes a pain. There are two tools that you use. I think on yours, it will be the colored plastic rings that you may have bought. Just make sure you got the right size for your vehicle. The ring tool should clamp around the fitting fairly easy. When it does, you hold it shut and push the tool toward filter side and gently pull the fuel line. It should separate. I've done a few of these and everytime, I have to have someone go over it with me. Ask an everyday machanic or call the dealer.if you can't get it off. If you try to do it right after turning off the vehicle, you will still have lots of fuel pressure and you will have to flip the inertia switch. If you let the vehicle sit for an hour or so than you will not have to flip the switch. Just do not try to put hose clamps back on the new filter. Its down right dangerous because its basically a semi high pressure line and its gas your messin with. Good Luck and let us know.
Thanks for the help. I finally figured it out. The 2001 model changed so that you don't need a special tool. I took a pair of channel locks and squezed the ring inward at the opening provided and the fitting pulled apart. The outlet had a simple remove the plastic clamp and the fitting pulls apart easily. I hope this helps anyone attempting this in the future.
