Hesitation question

1977 F250 hesitating when I give it gas from idle. Sometimes it almost dies but will spring to life and rev up fine after the initial drop in RPM. Would like to know what direction to put my energy into to remedy the problem. Appreciate the help.

Sounds like a lean condition. Check the choke. Does it get better/worse after it warms up?
Has it backfired lately?

No change warm or cold. Occasional backfire on rev-up.

Ford carb I presume ?

Is the carb accelerator rod indexed properly ? ...This is what usually causes hesitation.

Power Valve ?

Has any work been done to the carb later?

Carb is a Ford and no recent work done on it except me giving it a light cleaning. May seem like a dumb question, but how does one correctly index an accelerator rod?

On the front where the accelerator rod attaches there are 4 holes in a slot.

Which hole is that rod in ?

From the end of the arm .....1,2,3, or 4th

In addition to the carb checks, hook up a timing light and check your vacuum and mechanical advances separately.
