fuel tank relocation

I was wondering if anyone makes a kit to relocater the fuel tank out from behind the seat and out of the cab. I was thinking of mounting a newer tank between the frame rails under the box. Has anyone done this? Thanks

I want to do this too, but I don't want to lose my spare tire area. I don't know where a good spot would be.

I know the late 90s and newer are under the front left corner of the box. Might have to put in a fuel door from newer box as well.

The 70s ford trucks had a tank that ran on the outside of the frame rail along the drivers side. I dont know why this wouldn't work. Of course the spare tire spot between the rails is probably the easiest. I'll go measure my 78 ford truck and my 65 and see if the swap looks possible.

Sorry I was wrong The 73-79 Ford trucks had a tank that ran on the INSIDE of the frame rail between the frame and driveshaft along the drivers side. I dont know why this wouldn't work. I measured the tank in my 78 and it measurses 13.5" wide and 60" long and 9" tall (roughly 30gallons). I measured my 65 and it would fit with only minor mods the only problem is it would have to hang low 5"-6" below frame rail.
However while I was under the truck I noticed a beatiful spot behind the driver under the bed between the frame and bed side. The spot measues 9" deep 18" wide and 28" lond where you could fit a tank. The cubic feet measures out to be 19.59 gallons.

Between bed and bed side is ala a GM truck and is one hundred times worse than leaving the tank in the cab in a side impact.

I have the stock 19.5 gallon tank mounted in the front of the bed on our F250 Uni. simple mounting.

And I have a custom Stainless 40 gallon mounted in the front bed of "Christine".

For Below the bed tanks, Classic trucks did an article on installing a mustang tank into a 63 by Skip Porterfield.

Thanks for looking. I like the idea of having it inside the frame.
If you look at my truck pics, I have one of those on the outside of the frame but I've never had gas in it as the switch was disconnected when I bought the truck. I will be taking it out and patching the hole in the side panel. I want to route the filler inside the rear wheel opening.

Looks good, but I'm not getting caught in Phoenix (25 miles one way to work) when it's 115 degrees and not have a spare. I'm leaning towards the inside the frame rails like the 73-79s, I'll have to take a look at one of them.

Thanks for the comments though.

Believe there was an article in the 'articles/spec's forum' placing Mustang tank between frame. There is a 'how to' article in the 'classic Truck Magazine'. www.classictrucks.com/tech/0404cl_tank/ . One of the issues is access location. If you scroll down couple of topics in this forum 'Go'n gas' one of the members has a pic with access door on side of bed, in my opinion, well done, hardly noticeable. As mentioned, you can have tank made to your spec's, seem to recall list of businesses who fabricate these tanks in the online magazine.

73-79 frame rails were widened aft of the cab to accomidate the rear tanks and in side framerail tanks. FYI
