Is there a thread out there that will give me a good idea where the vehicle ID number would be found on the frame of the 1953-56 panel trucks? Mine is supposedly a 1953 and I see all kinds of parts numbers stamped but nothing that is a VIN. Thanks
They would be in the same location as the pickup, someplace on top the frame rails in front of the firewall. (Ford wasn't real fussy about it...) you may have to sand any dirt and rust off to find it.
In 53-55 the Vin plate was attached to the inside of the glove compartment door.
Thanks AX, Thats where I looked, like I said alot of production part numbers are very obvious and the frame is actual pretty clean without dirt and grease. I've looked all over and don't see anything. I would think it would be in a location that is fairly easy to spot. I do have the old 1971 Arizona plate that was on it and wondered if local DMV or Highway patrol could trace the plate. That plate may not even belong to the panel but then again it seemed like it had been there along time. Has anyone had success having plates researched?
They were sometimes stamped lightly, may have to sand off the paint with fine sandpaper to find it. look on top the frame rails near the front crossmember and/or just in front of the firewall on both sides. Back in the day they were only stamped for factory production purposes before the Vin plate was attached, not for ID like now.
Most DMVs are not set up to research the early non standardized Vin #s.
Are you sure the #s you found are part #s? Do you know what it should read?
for 53 should read: F10+(letter for engine size)+3+(letter for assembly plant)+(5 number serial #) Typical: F10D3A12345 Translation: F10=F100, D=215 CU in I-6, 3= 1953 model year, A=Atlanta plant, 12345= 12,345th 1953 truck built.
I have a 53 and a 54 frame and cannot find numbers stamped on either. I buffed the metal til it was shiny and no stampings all the way from the firewall to the bumper mount. I DO have the VIN plate in the glove box though so I might just go ahead and stamp the proper numbers to match on the frame.
CharlieLed, welcome to the forum. Sounds like your lucky, you have the plate on the glove box door. I never found mine either on the frame rails nor crossmembers.
