hello, i'm new to this forum and i could use some help. i have an '89 f-250 (5.8) and i need to replace the fuel pressure regulator. is there a trick to getting to it? i've been trying to squeeze my fingers enough to get an allen wrench to turn but i just can't seem to get a good grip on it.
Since it's your first post, I have to ask: why are you replacing it? Are you completely sure it's bad? I have seen people make some awful odd conclusions about what's wrong with their truck. Not that you have, just making sure.
As for getting to it - we have a 1990 Bronco with the same motor and it's very easy to get to. Are you sure you're talking about the right part?
I did one a few months ago and it was a bit of a pain. I remember the 5.8 being a little tougher than the 5.0 due to more Thermactor hoses in the area. You'll probably have to loosen some brackets holding the hoses in place, maybe remove some if they have removable clamps. If I remember correctly I think I lifted that fuel rail also. Make sure if you do this that you don't lose any injector o-rings and lube them before re-installing the rail. If you can find an allen socket it might work easier on the regulator.
The socket type won't fit on the 5.8. I had to use a regular allen wrench about a quarter turn at a time. It was easier to install than to get off because there is loc-tite on the threds from the factory and you have to wrench them all the way out. No easy way unless you start pulling a bunch of parts off to have easier acces, but then the bolts are still in upside down.
