Just picked up this truck from a friend's brother-in -law. 1991 F150 5.0 auto 2WD. Pan shape says it's an E40D. Truck runs real well and will drive all over the yard in reverse. Forward is another story. No strange noises or funny smells, just won't move. Lever position doesn't matter. I figured I would have to replace the tranny anyway but before I do I am going to check for codes and things like the lever position sensor. Just wondering if there is anything else I should check before I condem this box and put in a new used one? Thanks for the help all.........Shawn
i had the same thing happen to my c6 i dont know much about the electronic side of things but check fluid ?and what was wrong with mine was clutches inside the transmission
Shawn, you are right on with the MLPS. Before you spend the money on the part, drop the pan and take a look. If it's full of metal shavings and parts, it's done for. If it looks healthy, replace the MLPS. More likely than not, that's your problem.
The MLPS can't prevent the trans from going into gear. It can keep it from shifting out of first, but since you don't even have first, it isn't anything electrical. Something is broken inside. The trans needs to come out.
anyone know how hard these trannies are to rebuild? What special tools are involved? I have done a chevy 700r4 with so-so results( i was under the gun and needed to get the truck running) This one will be no rush, take my time do it right. I have seen master rebuild kits for $150 or so, and finding a decent used one seems kinda tough.
