cobra pliers

Pros and cons? These are made by knipex (germany), similar to slip joint, but has button to adjust. Sears has them now. Thanks

I wanted some too, but pricey. Went to a Advance auto parts store and found some Ampro similiar pliers for $10 and they work great!

Knipex makes probably the best quality pliers on the planet. I prefer the Alligators. I recently bought a new pair, because the ones I had before were getting worn out in the jaws after 15 YEARS of daily use! Got the new ones, took a triangle file and re-cut the teeth in the jaws of the old pair and put them in the box at my second job. The first time I used them after I "fixed" the jaws I found that they gripped like new again, meaning better than any other similar plier. I too saw the Ampro pair and they look like a nearly exact copy. I have found Ampro tools to be of surprisingly good quality so I wouldn't be afraid of them. However, I've gotten such good service from the Knipex's that I decided to pony up the money for the "real thing". YMMV. I had a pair of the locking ones "Cobra" style, but didn't like the button being in the way in some applications, but it looks like they've lowered the profile of the button, so it might not be much of an issue now. Don't know how that pair held up over the years for whoever stole them... I've had several pairs of Channel-Locks and once you use the Knipex a bit, you'll find the Channel Locks sitting around gathering dust. They are not NEARLY as good of a quality. I've got some that are much newer and MUCH less used that won't grip as good as the old Knipex did with worn-out teeth. The screw also tries to work loose and get sloppy. Knipex has no screw. Just get a pair. You won't be sorry.
