OT-Had a close one today

The wife and I were returning from a weekend at the lake this afternoon. Had traveled about 10 minutes on a two lane black top county road when a 19 year old drunk driver crossed the centerline and nailed us. I was glad to be in a Yukon SUV, which was still heavily damaged. We were fortunate to be uninjured. The three people in the Pontiace GrandAm were slightly cut and bruised but not seriously. The police arrested the driver of the GrandAm, cited him for DUI, underage drinking, and crossing the centerline. Hope he gets himself straightened out. Just wanted to let you guys know it happens so fast it is hard to believe. I saw him coming at us and avoided a headon by going for the ditch but he still hit us in the A pillar and knocked the rear end loose and put us in a 180 spin. Real scary stuff. Sorry to be talking about GM products but at least a Ford wasn't put out of circulation. LOL. Be careful out there.

Thank god it was a body on frame SUV

The next time some self righteous liberal starts complaining about the "gas guzzling" SUVs, relate how a vehicle with a lot of weight and a full frame and ride height saved you from injury......

Glad to here you and Your Wife are OK.

Another reason to insure that our Old Trucks are in good shape, in case something like this happens when we take them out for a spin.

I'm glad it was no worse. Sounds like YOUR alertness saved THEM from worse injury, too.

It`s good that you were watching so close, trouble can happen so fast. Glad it was no worse but still scary none the less.

Glad to hear that you and yours are ok, maybe the young person involved will see this as a life lesson and learn from it. My wife's dad was killed by a drunk driver who didn't even know he had been in an collision, the hurt and hole left in the family never go away. Didn't mean to preach but this a hot button topic for me.

I hope it does. Just found out the state of Missouri only requires $10K in liability insurance and that is all he carried. Can't replace my SUV for that so now I get to pay my decuctible and my insurance company will have to kick in the balance (more than his insurance!). His mom had already bailed him out, visited the tow lot, paid the tow lot bill for him in cash, sold his car to the tow lot for $25 and was gone before I got there at 9am this morning. If it had of been one of my boys they would have resided in the poky for a few days plus dealt with dad. At least no serious injuries. It is now a hot button for me but not as serious a circumstance as your family experienced.

I would sure file a small claims court action against him for that, plus any other damage not covered by your insurance. You can't get blood from a turnip, but you can get a judgment that is good for 10 years. Sooner or later he has to get a job, and then you can collect.

Most lawyers wont go this route as their fees are not covered, and they feel that any money recovered would not be worth the hassle and expense. But you can do this yourself, without a lawyer. Likely he will not contest it, and, if he does, the dui ticket will win you the case.

You may have to wait a few years for your money, but it will show against his credit, and maybe teach him to carry enough insurance. I would also check to see if his mother can be held responsible!

I agree, my wifes "commute" vehicle is an 04 F-150 SCREW. to keep her and the kids secured in. 5500lbs of meat.

On the other hand I commute 300/400 miles a week in my Civic...I wonder if she increased my life insurance lately

Thats a fine example of the judicial system. This guy decides to get hammered and drive, almost got someone killed, destroyed your vehicle, and he's not required by law to carry necessary insurance to pay for the damages.
Heres the lesson he learned: Next time I go out and get wasted make sure I slam into a car worth more than my POS that someone actually worked through life to afford.
By the way, what a mom! Right there to clean up his mess and sweep everything under the carpet so he wouldn't have to bear the agony of living with the consequences of his actions.
I've been in a case like this with a 3 week old Ranger. That was 5 years ago and I still get pissed off when I hear about situations like this. My grandmother was killed by a drunk driver before I was ever born to meet her. I'd hate to upset any liberals out there but I'm a firm believer in corporal punishment and capital punishment. In Singapore you can be shot where you stand for being caught drinking and driving. Now some might find this pretty harsh, but you don't see too many people drinking and driving in Singapore.

It sounds to me like there's a lack of Dad issue on that kids part to begin with. I'd still have my old man's leg attached to my hind end if I'd pulled a stunt like that.

That story made me mad just reading it! Thank God you weren't seriously injured.

At a bare minimum I would take him to court to get the amount of your deductible, plus interest. I'd also try and figure out how much your insurance rates go up and try to recover that too. And finally, any legal fees you incur. There's no reason you should be out of pocket one dime due to that kind of criminal negligence.

If the guy had an ounce of honor, he would have at least offered to try and repay what he cost you in the deductible. I'm not surprised he didn't.

His mom's clean up routine explains a lot about how he got so screwed up in the first place...

lack of dad, over-protective mom. Yeah, he learned his lesson, alright. I'd do what ***** B stated. And I'll tell ya why...My wife's friend has a 1965 mustang all restored parked in a rental garage with vintage car insurance on it cuz it's parked. Some kid, drunk, plows into the garage, thus totaling the stang, and flees the scene. Week later they catch him. They couldn't prove dui, but got him on leaving the scene of an accident. The insurance company wouldn't cover the stang cuz it was vintage car ins., and not collision ins. So she sued the kid for the cost of damages, but the judge dismissed the case, and instead convicted him of the fleeing the scene offense, and made him pay restitution on the total value of the car, plus probation, etc... She was suing for $4500, but the judge said that wasn't enough. So had she not even sued, he probably would've got a slap on the wrist, and she'd be out one 65 mustang, which she pretty much is anyway. Also, I'm glad you're alright.
