I was reading this post and found similarities with my son's 2001 V10 SD. He's had it about a year, bought it used with about 110,000 miles. Recently he was towing a 32 ft 5th wheel and the truck would not pull it as it did for the few weeks previous. We're thinking it's a fuel related issue. The loss of power and jerking I'm not so sure that it's the pump. He's changed fuel filter twice thinking he'd gotten bad gas. the local Auto Zone had no codes to diagnose either. Coil misfire sounds like a possibility too. Does the truck idle smooth and under load act up? Will the misfires show up in a more stringent diagnosis at the dealer? When he's not towing he can run up to 65 or so and when he steps on the accelerator it loses power and lugs down. He's on the road and too far from home for me to help. Any information would be appreciated.
Yea my truck idled just fine, acted normal. Until it was put under load. So i guess the COP was on its way out. Mine also did not throw a code. Might be a bit time consuming but he can buy one good COP and start replacing one by one with a ride inbetween to test under load. Good luck to him.
He changed the plugs last year after he first got the truck. He called tonight and said he replaced the fuel pump. Said it runs great now. He plans a trip home with out the trailer tomorrow so he'll get a chance to see how well it runs. I e-mailed this thread to him so he's got more items to check out if it starts acting up again. Thanks for your responses.
I had a 2000 Excursion with a V 10 and had no problems in the 4 years and 80,000 miles I drove it. Sometimes I miss that rig...
Cool. Been tied up with work. Looks like I finally got one right. But be fair. People carry spare belts and light bulbs, etc., all the time. Deisel guys even carry spare engines don't they?..... Besides, I'm sure I just got the idea from one of the real guru's in some other post - But it is nice to see a positive result from it, and thanks anyway....
I just got a 2000 F250 with a V10 and it has a misfire for #7 cylinder I swaped the coil packs for 7 to 1 and 1 to 7 and changed the plug and I still get the misfire on #7.. I am assuming that would make the coil packs good. The problem with mine is it acts up after you get up to speed and the rpms are between 1500 and 2000 if you give it more gas and get it over 2000 rpms it will smooth out. Could it be a bad injector or something else.
Are you sure that when you swapped the coils that the misfire did not go to #1 and the motor acts the same? A coil is $50.00 or so. Just get one and put it in #7 hole. Check to see that you have voltage getting to the coil on the primary side. (the plug that attaches to the coil). My miss was also most noticable at 1500 to 2300 rpm. But that is the symptom that any motor will give with a secondary ignition problem. I would not condemn the fuel injector at this point because if it was not delivering fuel the miss would be at idle, and for sure at higher rpms. One other tip. Make sure that you don't have any vacumn leaks. Ford's are famouse for EGR hose leaks etc. Good luck. Hope this helps.
I got it hooked up to a scanner and it turned out to be the connecter for the injector was dirty. cleaned it plugged it back in and miss is gone what a differance it made im very impressed with this truck.
I recently started having a minor intermittent miss in my 99 V10. Didn't worry about it too much because it was barely noticable. I thought that when I have some time I will replace the Fuel filter, put some injector cleaner in the tank, and clean the throttle body. 108,000 miles on the truck now. Plugs changed at 95,000. O.K. So going on a trip this weekend, 100 miles one way, the miss started occuring again. On the way home, 3:00P.M. Houston Tx. 101%s F. the miss started getting worse. This started under slight load at highway speeds. It is now bucking and jerking at any speed when hot. Runs great cold for about 10 miles or so and then starts rearing it's angry head. Checked the DPF Sensor voltage, the EGR Valve, and both are OK. No check engine light. The miss is too bad to be only one cylinder. Acts like the old days when someone would switch the ignition wires on 2 cylinders after doing a tune-up. It just has to be an ignition, heat related, issue. Help! and Thanks!
I went through 3 months of this with another Ford motor, I was about to kill myself when I found the problem. Fords are VERY susceptible to spark plug brands and especially installation. I tried Autolites, Bosch even NGK Iridiums trying to get my Zetec to run properly. It would run fine for awhile, then start to miss just a little, then more and more as time went by. I would pull the plugs and the ceramic resistor would be cracked causing a misfire. I finally got a set of Motorcraft plugs in VERY gently, without stressing the ceramic and VIOLA', no more misfires. I would bet your plugs have cracked insulators.
