Question about '05 4wd

I have an '05 HD Scab, 4x4, 8' bed and have aquestion about the 4wd. I jacked up the front of the truck and was checking to see if the front brakes were hanging up. When I spun the wheel I was surprised to see the axle shaft turning as well as the front drive shaft. It seems like a dumb setup since all the 4wd parts are wearing even in 2wd, as well as a fuel mileage killer.
Is this normal? I thought the front wheels free-wheeled in 2wd mode. If this is normal can manual hubs be installed?

the 4x4 disconnects at the driveshaft so it is normal for all of it to spin up to the t case. you can't put in manual hubs because there is none made.

I guess the more advanced things get, the less common sense goes into trucks. Engineers probably did a study that suggested manual hubs were too much of a hassle for "today's" 4wd consumer to deal with. Therefore we are driving around ready to get into 4wd with a flip of a switch and also paying for that mechanism at the pump.
