Basestocks are still less of an issue when you are talking about a high-lift flat-tappet cam. Oils with a higher ZDDP content and high HTHS viscosity become important. Unlike bearings which use oil pressure to prevent actual contact, the cam-lifter interface is rubbing contact. I say go for the Rotella Syn all year or at least in winter and the 15W-40 in summer.

I have used it in all of my FEs but they are a little different breed of engine. If your engine starts using oil, it will most likely be due to the use of a diesel rated oil. As far as I am aware, the only fix is to hone the cylinders. Chose wisely, grasshopper.

I thought diesel rated oils were superior then gas oils? I have a new FE and dont want it to start smoking because of Mystick 10w-30. Please elaborate.
