Currently my 91 302 Bronco as 140K miles on it and the tranny has been there all long while the engine has been rebuilt. I hate to say it but i think the transmission is on its way out..i hope not though. While driving the engine shifts out of first around 3 or 4 grand; and there is this high pitch whine the follows the rev of the engine. Then when I try to downshift by accelerating the rev come up way too much than they normally should. If anyone could help troubleshoot what is going on it would really be appreciated.
I am going to assume you have seen no "check engine" light nor has the OD indicator in the end of the shift lever flashed at you. If I am wrong in making this assumption let me know.
What is the condition of the fluid? Red is best with no bubbles/foam Oh and if its bright red but looks like the finish on a red bassboat, thats way too much metal flake for anything but a paintjob.
You can try replacing the fluid and filter. Personally I'd pull the EEC-IV computer codes just on the off chance there is some sort of fault that may not be enough to trigger the "CEL". The E4OD is a finicky critter and with that kind of mileage prepare yourself for the worst if only to keep the impact of the real answer from being overwhelming when you do find out. I'd pursue as i mentioned and then check back with us if you don't find anything.
the fluid is in need of a change, that much i know..its more of a brown, the check engine light has flashed on a few times but not recently with this problem.
