Have a 99 250 Super Duty with a 5.4 and automatic. Having an annoying performance issue. When starting off from a dead stop under light to medium-light acceleration, the transmission starts off in 2nd gear. Course it bogs down a bit and is sluggish. If I mash on the accelerator it will drop down into 1st but this usually happens when the truck is already at 10-15 mph. At this point if revs up pretty high and accelerates too quickly. If from a dead stop I accelerate in a medium to heavy manner then it will start off in first gear but I cant drive like this all the time obviously.
These symptoms occur when the truck is in " D ", with the overdrive on. If I turn off the overdrive it appears that it usually starts off in first most every time
Question - is there an easy or simple external adjustment of some kind that can adjust the transmission to always start out in first gear.
Yea, I know, leave it in overdrive off all the time but I dont want to do that, there must be some sort of adjustment
first off you have to have it checked for tranie codes, as you have what sounds like a electrical problem not telling the pcm the truck stopped and to shift in first,
some things that come to mind are the stop lamp switch. speed senser and the mulitifuntion switch on the side of the trans , even a stuck shifter valve solinode could do this
unless you have the pcm tested and the trans codes checked your going to run in circles in a useless manor. always test, check then replace
