Break Fluid

Hey guys,
I was told I needed to change my break fluid as a routine maintenance on my
2002 4.0 Maxda. Does anyone do that ? I have 50,000 trouble free miles and I need some advice on this question.
Thanks much, in advance.

Who told you that?

If it looks alright, you can leave it in there, 50K is fine on brake fluid. Just as long as it's not contaminated with water or leaking or anything of that sort.

I saw this post at the time that I just finished reading through this article / test.... by the NHTSA and NIST... on "To Flush or not to Flush..."

"To Flush or not to Flush"

FWIW...I tried to change/flush mine at 35K... or when-ever I did any significant brake work.

I would change it. The 2000 f150 I owned the brakes started to get spongy in 2005 with about 75k. If you have a mighty vac it's fairly easy to do. But you need someone helping make sure the fluid level doesn't get to low. If not you have to start and stop which is a pain. It can prolong the life of brake cylinders and master cylinders, unless your one of the lucky ones that never has any trouble.

Brake Fluid, one of the most neglected automotive fluids & one of my pet peeves!!!! lol

Looks can't accurately determine the condition of brake fluid, only testing it can.

I choose to change mine every 2-3 years to keep the internal system corrosion down from absorbed misture & the boiling pont UP, so I don't get a soft pedal upon hard braking.

Keeping internal corrosion, from absorbed water down, will help lengthen component life & you haven't lived until you have to fork over a sizeable portion of your gold, for a new ABS motor!!!!! lol

Look through this easy to read article on brake fluid & see where you are on the "Curve"!!!!!

I just flushed my Rangers system with Motorcraft PM-1 (danged good stuff), so now I know where I am on the curve!!!!

Enjoy the read!!!!

I agree, looking at the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir will not tell you a thing. Heat degrades the brake fluid in the calipers, and wheel cylinders that you can't see until it's flushed out.

It's been a long habit of mine to change brake, and power steering, fluid every 45-50,000. When you think about the cost of repairs, seems like cheap insurance!
