I have looked at four manual 5spd used '99 - '01 Rangers. Three of them had problems when switching into or out of 4WD. Usually the problem was only in Low range, but sometimes the High would not engage either. I realize the vehicle must be stopped, in neutral, and with the brake pedal depressed in order to engage or disengage 4WD Low. The fourth Ranger I am looking at has already had the electronic motor replaced that engages/disengages the 4WD. Anyone had similar problems and I am wondering if I will have problems later with the one that already had the replacement?
Alot of the problem people have is from not being used, they seldom use high range, and hardly ever use low range. Use the 4 wheel drive system once a month in both ranges. Drive it around in your yard, or back in forth in a parking lot, don't make hard turns on dry pavement while in 4 wheel. I live in the country, and have 3 acers, so it's easy for me, city folks may not have a place to play. The electric shift motor tends to freeze up from nonuse. I'm sure some others will have some idea's as well.
After doing a search on 4WD switching in the Forum drop down menu I was able to read about enough people who had trouble with the PVH system. I think I'll shop for a '97 that can i can find manual hubs for. I went to Tellico4x4.com and I didn't see manual hubs for '98-present. thanks!
