removing retaining ring

How do you get the retaining ring off of the automatic hub so you can pull the rotor off? I can't seem to get it.

go to an auto parts store and get a set of o-ring removal tools(5-7bucks). you may have to use one or more of them. also there is free play in the axles that may place pressure on the retainer. with your wheels straight. looking at the front end from the rear. you can see the u-joints and axle in the knuckle area. with a large screwdriver or small pry bar. push the axle back towards the differential. this will take some pressure off the retainer. you will have to use the o-ring tools to pick out the steel ring. the ring is tough to pick out and it may take some time, but it will pop out.

Yep what Khadma said. I have to use 2 picks one to keep it from spinning and one to get under it to roll it out. You should find a 1/4 inch gap in the ring where you can insert the pick. I use one with a 90 deg bend to get on the back side of the ring and roll it out towards me. It can be a bugger sometimes but it will come out.

There is a set of reversed pliers (when squeezed they open) with the teeth on the outside of the jaws that work slick for this. You can get them at decent tool places.

Well i'm redoing everything on the front brakes and installing the manual hub kit while im at it. Been running around most of the day looking for the correct seals for the back of the rotor and the axle nut sockets. I've almost got one side done and then one of the caliper bolts didn't go in quite right so now I have to retap the bolt hole, yippee!

Dwoodler, I think he's talking about the retaining ring for the hub assymbly but since you bring it up he will need the snap ring pliers as well since he's replacing the autos. Getting rid of the autos was the best thing for me on my 96. Using cheap mile m@rker for replacements wasn't they started squealing about every 4 months and drove me nuts. I put a warn kit in and have had no trouble since. 69 did you get a full kit to replace your hubs, you will need to change the spindle nut and retainers out when going to manuals the MM kit I got at first didn't have them and I had to get them separately. The warn kit had them in it.

When you have the rings out, you can grind a 45 degree angle on the ends. It makes it easy to get the pic under the next time you need to dissasemble.

I can't seem to get the new rotor seated back on the spindle, any ideas? I used some emery cloth on the spindle to clean it up a bit.

Helirich your a genius I should have thought of that one of the 15 or so times I took mine apart because of the MM hubs I had. 69 the last time I reworked my hubs the spindle bearings I got from bronco graveyard were much a much close tolerance than any I had before. I had to clean the grease off the spindle and use a light film of oil to seat it as well as being dead on straight when running the hub/rotor back onto the spindle. It was a bugger but it went without too much fuss I think the wb grease was compacting between the spindle and bearing at first making it harder for it to go on. Hmmm I hope I dont have to have a puller to get it back off next time. But I dont want to jinx myself I havent heard a peep outa these hubs and its been about 8 months since I reworked them.

grinding the angle on their is a good I deal. The way I get mine off is I use plyers to hold it in place on the top and then I got the smalest screw driver I had and I grinded it into this shap "(" a slite U shape and made it pretty sharp. Last time I used it I got the ring off first time. But I just came threw some deep water a week ago and their was no greas on it....I think that helped.

I forgot about that large round internal snap ring, 96bronco58. It's a real pita! For the rotor bearings - put the rear one on and then while moving the rotor around, slide the front one in. Put the first nut in the socket (use a little grease to keep it from falling out) and then push the bearing back and thread the nut on - make sure the little tit is toward you when once it's threaded on. If you're having a fair amount of trouble, try fitting your bearings on by themselves to make sure you were given the right ones.

69 did you buy just the rotor and your trying to get it onto the old hub, or did you get them already together. Im a little confused as to whether your problem is getting the hub onto the spindle or the rotor onto the hub.

well I got it together finally, I couldn't get the rotor/hub assembly on the spindle... I wiped the excess grease off and used some emery cloth on the spindle.

Sounds like my last set of bearings/races from bronco graveyard, They were a very close tollerance and went on kind of tight.
