Hi All, I am new to the forum and I have tried a search on this to no avail. I have just bought a 2001 F-250 4X4 CC and upon going over it with the fine tooth comb I've discovered that I can't get the spare tire down from it's storage position. It seems something is stripped in the mechanism that accepts the drive wrench. I can reach in and sever the steel cable to drop the tire ,but then I'd have to carry tire in bed. Is there a fix to this? If not, is there a value priced replacement winch assembly? Thank in advance for any help.
I believe there maybe a special "key" you need to put on the end of the rod to lower the tire. I know my 05 has one and I believe needing that key goes back several years.
If you did use the key then I believe you can, and you can probably get a new winch to replace yours after you cut the cable, but I know I've seen threads about how to get the tire down without the key or when there are other problems.
Yes, the Fords require a "key" for the spare tire carrier (worst design ever!). Usually, the key is in the glove box when truck is bought new. If you bought the truck used from a dealer, I would request the part from the dealer. If all else fails, go ahead and cut it (you'll probably need bolt cutters). I just replced my carrier.....retail is about $94+/- (the female end of the key stripped out....like I said....worst design ever!)
agreed... horible design.
If you wind up needing a replacement winch, either ask @ your local 4x4 shop or start asking guys with lifted trucks, they're stock spare is useless and many remove the spare and leave the winch dangling.
