Check this out how much can I tow without turning my OD off. I need to settle this argument with my father that towing a 14' aluminum jon boat I need to turn OD off. I know I should turn it off for a heavy load right? What is the weight limit that I would have to turn it off at? If anyone can help me here that would be awesome.

Check your manual for the towing capacities. When towing turn off the O/D when the tranny hunts, shifting alot. As for what weight to turn off the O/D, turn it off when the tranny hunts.
A 14' jon boat....What's that weigh, 1000lbs max with trailer and all? I'd would even touch the O/D, leave it on

No I dont turn it off, but my father drives me nuts with that "you should turn your OD off" Hes a hard headed ol'man who learned the hard way one time pulling a
20' Four winns from California to Las Vegas and smoked his tranny in his 91 Lariat.
Ya my weight limit is 8500LBS which is alot of weight.

If I am solo or pulling my small utility trailer I leave it on. When I hook up my 31'TT (7000lbs loaded) I turn it off. It does tend to hunt for the correct gear with it on. While towing I get a temp reading of 160-167 according to the Edge display. Empty, no towing it usually runs about 140-150. THere is a slight temp increase in the trans fluid but nothing to be worried about. I usually tow at 55-65 MPH. The TT is 8'wide, 11'-2" tall and 31' long so there is alot of drag behind me. The truck pulls great!
