hello everyone, What is the best way to pull the steering wheel on my 1964 f-100 truck ? should i just back off the nut and hit it with a hammer and just pop it off ? or should i buy a steering wheel puller? I got my donoer steerng wheel out of a junk yard and i used a hammer to get it off the truck there.
Deron, The proper way to remove it is to use a puller. I have an inexpensive harmonic puller that I use.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
next time in the junk yard i will be carfull. i only did it once cause i was in a hurry i hope the ford gods are not mad at me for beating the junk yard truck
I usually leave the nut on at the top of the shaft so the point of the puller doesnt split the shaft open had that happen before really sux. After it breaks free loosen up the puller take the nut off and then put the puller back on and continue. Just to be safe.

except for the theft you intentionally commited against the retailer. goes a long way towards the cost of doing business and the cost of goods sold. childish acts like this cost all consumers in the end and i have no interest in subsidizing someone elses hobby. also speaks directly to the integrity of an individual who would do such a thing and also to the intelligence of the same individual to brag about being so low. sorry but theft is theft and admitting it is stupid. hawkrod
you can get a steering wheel puller or a harmonic puller from AutoZone using their rental tool program....give them 15 bucks, use the tool, give it back and get your money back. thats what they are for, you get what you need and noone gets ripped off.
Back to the original question...
You can beat it with a hammer but striking the shaft directly damages the gearbox. 64 and earlier do not use a rag joint so the shaft is solid right down to the pinion in the gearbox. Use the puller, a little penetrating oil, and if absolutly necessary, a few taps on the end of the puller shaftwill jar it loose. Use the nut on method as d1a2n3e mentioned, you'll be happier when the wheel doesn't bop you in the mouth!!!
