I have an 02 7.3. i just bought a 26 ft toy box trailer. Im actually afraid to tow it up to the mountains or coast where i live {california central valley}. It seems in the small amount Ive towed it it just dosent have the power it should. It will hold 4th gear on level ground ,if you really keep your foot in it, but the slightest rise makes it shift down. also it just dosent seem to have quite the power i think it should have even without a load. I been averaging 16 to 17 mpg highway and 13 to 15 around town. Trailer brakes arent dragging.I noticed even driveing back from the coast yesterday it dosent have the uphill torque in top gear {no trailer}. It starts and runs good other than this.air and fuel fitlters are not dirty and have been recently changed. I bought this truck to tow and believe I shouldnt have to modifiy it for this purpose .Thats what it was built for! I dont expect it to smoke the tires with a trailer or haul 20,000 pounds , I just want it to tow well and not feel like a geo metro hauling a freight train. thanks guys. Oh yea truck has about 55,000 miles on it. One more thing It may be my imagination but sometimes it seems if i drive for awhile like an hour or 2 up and down hill it seems to lose power and if i let it rest awhile it seems to be ok but im not sure if im imagining this. thanks again
Several things were causing my power loss..
My trailer brakes were dragging, I fixed that.
Changed fuel filter..
It didn't change my mpg, I still get 17 - 17.5 not pulling TT...And 12-13 pulling it, but the power is back.
Good luck, IMHO the fuel filter has more to do with our trucks than we realize. So I'm going to change mine every oil change, 5,000 miles.
