OMG, i have the same pet peeve. I live on a mile of gravel road and this time of year I don't even bother to wash my expy because one trip out the driveway and the back is completely coated in fine powdery dust. I have to fill up my windshield washer resevoir every week and a half because I have to use it so much just to see out the rear window.
I'm curious to see answers too. And I'd like to see if the spoiler has any effect on gas milage, by "spoiling" the eddy currents that exist back there.
i have an oem ford spoiler, painted to match the eb gold trim, on my '97. lucked into it by chance in knoxville.
get these mostly for the looks and unique-ness of them (just how many expy's do you see with them?!), but don't buy one to keep dust, dirt or rain off the lift glass! these will not keep your glass clean.
I bought one from Ford three years ago, and I've been pretty happy with the appearance of my Expy. The cool thing is you can immediately spot your Expy in a parking lot. As for the dust, I have noticed that dust and rain do not collect on the glass while driving like it used to prior to installing. I do not use my rear wiper when it rains anymore. As for the increased MPG's, I don't believe that anything improved there.
I use a California Duster to knock the dust off the rear (and the whole vehicle) every other day. I really don't like washing just to get the dust off it.
I installed a oem spoiler on my 99 Explorer and was not to difficult to install. Maybe an hour or so. The most nerve racking part was drilling the holes in my truck. I just purchased a 99 Exp. and see there is a factory sploiler listed on e-bay. Might have to try it on this truck.
