Red face 98 mitsubishi eclipse

alrighty. i have asked questions about this car here before because the mitsubishi forum i tried seems to be of little help.

here's the deal - my younger brother has a 98 eclipse, 2.0l dohc. every now and then, the car would try to overheat. all of a sudden, the upper radiator hose sprung a leak, spraying towards the distributor. he got a new hose and topped off the radiator but now he can't get the thing to start. my other brother fiddled around with it and decided there is no spark. when the hose started leaking, the car started to overheat. my bro said that all of a sudden it just died, while he was driving down the highway. my observation would be that the water shorted out the distributor. what do you all think. any other ideas?

this motor is old and he will eventually be putting a new one in but we need this to get him buy until the funds increase. while i was poking around, i took off the air intake hose to spray in a bit of starter fluid. this did not start her up but i noticed that the engine was breathing in a sense that it would suck in, as it should, then it would blow out a little bit...leaking intake valve?

again, thanks for your help on this. i imagine that you all will be able to help more than the other forum.

I don't know what Mitsucrappy forum you tried before, but if it wasn't Club3G, you should give them a whirl.
Link to the 1G/2G section.

alright...a bit of an update if anyone is interested. the crankshaft sensor was bad. we replaced it and now it starts. it starts hard and overheats quite a bit. ran a compresstion test. everything is very low. i think the engine has just about had it. we are going to put a monster in it soon. how the crankshaft sensor happend to go out when the radiator hose broke, who knows. thanks for the help.
