I have a 2004 Sport Trac which has a inside tire tread cupping problem on Goodyear Wrangler tires. Front end alignment/balancing and rotation do not fix the problem/cupping just increases, even with increased air pressure.
Any suggestions for solving?
Do you have the camber kit installed? Ford's factory setup leaves very little adjustment for the alignment. Could be that your mechanic has adjusted all he can and without the camber kit you're still going to get the cupping. My 01 ST had bad wear on both the inside of the front tires due to this problem. My mechanic swore by the camber kit which he installed. Time will tell if this helps my problem but the truck tracks straight and I see no noticable wear on the front tires now (moved the back to the front and vice versa). Good luck with your problem.
I do not have the kit, but Ford says it is OK on alignment and realligned before a 3300 mile trip, during which the cupping continued. Today they filed a claim for tire replacement due to a Ford service bulletin honoring a factory recall on the Goodyear Wrangler tires. If approved I have requested car tire replacement/will ask about the kit when tires are replaced.
Ford performed the alignment to new specs, would only put on the same Goodyear tire(revised model) and promised better results. I have 17,000 miles on the ST, so I will wait and see what happens. Their opinion is shock replacement is not necessary. There is a bulletin at Ford which authorizes this procedure, including the tire replacement.
Unfortunately, no, but I will try to get it for you from the dealer on Monday. Some of the techs call it feathering. Apparently Ford required Goodyear to participate in the deal but thru the Ford dealership. Goodyear sites will only try to sell you new tires.
