what is the usual down time for a head gasket job i can't stand to be without my truck and does ford give tou a rental truck??
My truck was in for HG replacement for over 10 days, very busy shop, also they have a lot of emergency vehicles being worked on, which come first before us regular folk.
Good luck getting a loaner truck, ford only allows $30 per day rental. If you can talk to the service manager ahead of time and he might eat the differance on the rental costs. The first service manager I was working with would go out of he way to get me a truck, but he did get canned, not sure if that was the reason, the new service manager won't budge.
Good luck
My truck is in the shop now for the 2nd time since March for head gaskets. I made an appointment 2 weeks ago to have this done, took it in Tuesday morning.
I just got off the phone the my service rep, she said I should have it tommorrow. We will see.

We'll normally do a headgasket job in one day from start to finish, the problem is that we get backed up with work for several days, so it may take a week before we get to look at it.
Got it back Friday at 5:00, mechanic said it was a piece of cake after pulling the cab. I did notice that there were addition charges other than head the gaskets like egr and some o-ring kits, I can't find my invoice to go in more detail.
So far there is no whistling sound and I have not driven enough to check for fluid leak. I am curious, and no one has said anything about a breakin period or return visit to check the head bolt for tightness. I'm guesing its ok to run.
Time will tell. I hope this does the trick.

what problems did you see that was a cause of blown head gasket(smoke, noise, leaking). I have a '05 and it runs great but i notice when i crank it for the first time each day and let it warm up for about 3-5 min i see a short period of white/gray smoke for about 1-2 min and then it goes away not to be seen again until i let it sit all-day or night then start it. Did any of you guys experience this...
I wouldn't worry about a little smoke on cold-start as long is it does not continue any longer than what you're having. Headgasket leaks hardly ever result in exhaust smoking (unless they are leaking really bad), it's more common to have coolant spewing out of your resevoir.
my truck is in the shop for the second time for puking coolant. the first dealership that looked at it replaced the cap on the reservoir(even though i told them them that i had already done that). they also replace the intercooler boost tubes, and reflashed the pcm, i drove away knowing i still had a problem, but oh well. now its in again, and they're telling me the cant get the truck to puke coolant. i told them to put a trailer behind it! so any way, now they're replacing the egr cooler(no head gaskets). are these other dealerships performing a series of test to determine bad head gaskets, and why does mine seem to be dodging the bullet in doing my head gaskets
If a truck is puking coolant out of the resevoir, the most likely cause is leaking head gaskets.
I know I would hate to put an egr cooler on a truck, then have to tear it back down again to do head gaskets. That's why if it's puking coolant out of the cap, it gets both head gaskets and a cooler when I do one.
There was a recall to put a sticker on the bottle to indicate a different level. When an EGR cooler is really, really bad, it will bubble exhaust out of the resevoir at idle. Headgaskets puke coolant when driving at high boost pressures. Sounds to me like you have a headgasket issue, and perhaps it's time to try a different dealer... it sounds to me like the one you're dealing with is trying everything possible to not have to pull the heads.
