i have an 86 150 with the 300. it doesnt have a tach. i want one in it, what tach should i get and how hard is it to install. should i try to find a factory type tach, or get an aftermarket one?
Aftermarket tach mounted on top of the dash is nice. You probably don't want the typical 8000 rpm tach for your max 4000 winding inline six. Look in my gallery. I have a 4000 rpm tach that is nice and big. About $65 at J C Whitney. Good brand Datcon which makes OEM I understand. My only complaint is the lighting on this tach is not the greatest, but works for me.
Also, look at my oil pressure gauge mount on the steering column for another option of tach placement. I put tach and OP gauge on top of the dash in my motorhome and really like that placement as it is in your sight all the time.
Jeggs has a small 6000 rpm tach for about $65 that also is not greatest lighting, too bright at top, but is a good compromise for a 4000 rpm engine.
Best lighting is a cheapo 8000 rpm tach I got form J C Whitney for $24.
If you want a factory tach, and you have guages already. Oil, and Ammeter guages, etc...
All you have to do is find a factory instrument cluster with the tach option from a 1981 to 1986 F-series or bronco, and plug it in. That simple. You may have to swap out the shift indicator etc... but no wiring needed at all.
1980 clusters will not work, unless you have a 1980 due to wiring and circutry differences. though it can be modified.
If you have a cluster with idiot lights, then you need to go aftermarket.
