Yes I did say they discontinued the Custom in 1982 then BROUGHT the Custom back in 1987 (due to complaints so I was told).
1982 to 1986 were "no name" baselines and they were very option restrictive.

Here is a scenerio I remember at our local Ford dealer as Example:
Salesman back in 1982: "That truck doesn't come with that option sir!, But over here this truck does"
Customer: "but that truck has carpet! I don't want carpet!"
Salesman: "Yes, sir, the XLT comes with carpet."
Customer: "But I want that option without carpet!"
Salesman: "Sorry sir that option only comes with the XLT, or Lariat, and they have carpet." "I suppose we could order you a rubber floor mat for $500, then install it for about $350 in labor."
Customer: "Why not just put the option in the baseline?"
Salesman: "I don't know if we can do that or not. The Factory wont let us order them like that anymore." "I could ask the service department."--------"They said they could do it a week from next Tuesday, but it will cost you $1500 in parts and labor." "The XLT only costs $500 more than baseline".
Customer: "What a bunch of "horsepucky!"

Etc... Etc.... One reason why my father is now a toyota (sic) man.

wow great story...i dont understand why they would have ever discontinued the CUSTOM for any reason...its probably one of the biggest reason ford out sells most truck companies or all of them actually...my truck was basically an entirely BASE model...1977 Ford F-100 Custom. vinyl seat(woven pattern), rubber floor, 300 I6 with 3 on the tree, 2wd, no ps, no power brakes(was that an option?) and no A/C, and AM/FM radio or at least thats what was in it when i put the CD player in the radio slot was modified so it might not have had AM/FM before
