Weight Capacity

I have a 1995 F250 4x4. I have heard that most of these trucks are rated for three quarter ton, but some are rated for a full ton.

Is this true? If so, how do you know which rating your truck has?

"1/2-ton", "3/4-ton" and "1-ton" are basically outdated terms. For instance, my '93 F250 (a 3/4-ton truck) has a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 8800 lbs. That's the total weight I can have sitting on 4 tires (including the tires). I haven't weighed the truck yet, but as it's a supercab longbed, it's pretty heavy, but probably not much more than 6000 lbs. That means I can throw 2800 lbs. on the truck (including passengers and fuel). That's almost a ton and a half. My old '90 F150 (a 1/2-ton truck) could haul about 1500 lbs--3/4 of a ton.

At the end of the day, what you need to go by is on your vehicle manufacturer's label on the door jamb (or door--I can never remember which it's on). GVWR is total for the vehicle, plus the Gross Axle Weight Ratings (GAWR) are also there. Gross Combined Weight Ratings (GCWR, or, how much you can tow) are in tables in the owner's manual and are based on 4x4 or 4x2, engine, tranny, rear gears and body configuration.
