Power steering fluid

I've been putting STP power steering fluid in my resivoir.....I just read where you are supposed to use ATF......Am I hurting the system?

I've been using a "turkey baster" to suck all the fluid out and fill it up and run for a while and repeat....the fluid that comes out is "root beer" color, but the fluid going in is clear. I think I should do a flush, but couldn't find the procedure using the search function. I saw one on the OTHER forum and I really trust you guys more. I want to get rid of that grind whine when I brake or turn. Won't the flush help this?

Thanks,
Leo in Mississippi

Been there Done that, I couldn't find the thread I did mine with but basicly it said to remove the return line off of the hydrobooster( this is the line that returns to the PS reserviour) and install a 3/8 line on and run it into a bucket or container. Have someone start the truck and turn the steering wheel from stop to stop, while someone keeps filling the reserviour with new ATF. Some guy's on here are going with the Synthetic ATF. You shouldn't have hurt anything, I did the same thing. Just flush it good.

John Deere has it right. I've done mine twice now. The only thing I would add is have the person also gently press the brakes a few times to get that fluid circulating out as well.

Thanks for the info,

how important is the fluid cooler? I bypassed the auxillary ATF cooler when I installed my Tru-cool max.....could I use it in series with the p/s cooler for better cooling?

Does anyone know how many quarts that system holds?

Get three quarts of Syn ATF and flush it all out. You'll know when you're done because the root beer coming out the hose will turn color into more like a grenadine.

Once you are done, park the truck overnight with the wheel turned all/most of the way to one side. The next night turn it the other way and leave it. Repeat for a few nights to get all the air out of the system.

If you want a quick fix to get rid of the noise, add some stp. I never had to time to a flush, so i took some fluid out and added a bottle of stp. It has been silent ever since.

I put 3 quarts of synthetic ATF through the system and did the "turn the tires overnight" trick a few times and I STILL have the whine and grind......But I did notice that the braking is much better......That grinding and whining is SOOOO ANOYING!!!!!

Any other ideas?

THanks,
Leo in Mississippi
