I've been a PSD owner for awhile now, and was wondering how does the V10 perform? I know it came with a 3.73 axle and a 4.30 axle. How do the two compare? Obviously, the 4.30 will feel quicker around town, but overall how do they compare? Gas mileage, towing, etc.
I've also considered a Chevy 2500 Suburban with the 8.1, but I really didn't notice a huge difference between the 3.73 equipped ones and the 4.10 trucks.
I have both an F250 and Excursion with V10s and 4.30s. I love the set up. I wouldnt have anything else. The V10 has tons of power, gets decent mileage for the size vehicles it is lugging around. I have had zero issues with either truck, both have right at about 90,000 miles.
I tow a 7000# car trailer over the summer, and all but a few trips are local. It has plenty of power to pull this trailer without issue. Other than this, my truck is used in the winter (as a car) and also if there are more folks than fit in the Cobra.
I know this is bound to be a gasser vs. oil burner debate, but here's my take.
I planned on ordering my 2005 so I looked at all the options. I drove a friend's 7.3 crewcab as well as a 6.0 Excursion, then the dealer lent me a V10 '04 for an afternoon.
My opinion was that for starters, I did not want to listen to the diesel.
Throttle response was nothing like the gasser and until the turbo spooled up power was not what I would be happy with. I know my V10 will walk any stock diesel. Mind you, neither is a drag racer.
I'm sure they have the edge for towing over a gasser.
MPG. I know lots of folks talk about the better mileage, but at least for the folks I know...it's not double what mine gets. Another friend with a 5.4 gets the same mileage I do.
yeah, i like my V10 also... and i drive a diesel 30ft box truck all day at work and i do not want to listen a a diesel when i'm off..i love the quiet V10
My 05 V10 is awesome. I had a 98 dually Dodge with the Cummins diesel, and the V10 would probably keep my diesel in sight unless we were pulling really big loads (PS guys, please don't jump on this one. Not trying to start a dodge vs ford war). Right now I pull a car hauler or my 26' enclosed snowmachine trailer with 4 sleds (no idea what weight is, sorry). V10 with 3.73 rearend did an awesome job pulling through the mountains of I-90 from Washington to Billings MT, then way up into the mountains. Great engine, great power.
BTW, do the math on total cost of ownership, and you'll find that unless you're towing on a regular basis, it will take over 100k miles to make the diesel cheaper to buy and operate than a gas engine. And when I did that calculation, diesel was still cheaper than regular unleaded.
