Sounds like the fuel pump crapped out. If you take off the air cleaner and look down the carb while rotating the throttle lever, do you see fuel stream out and down into the intake? Of course this is with the keys out! Not that I should have to say it, but you never know. If there is nothing coming out, you prob have either a clogged pickup, clogged fuel filter or a dying or dead pump. Good Luck

Are you getting fuel to the carb? When it does run for those few seconds, does it back fire or run smooth?

I suspect the fuel pump...but need more info.

Check the fuel lines for any cracks or leaks, from the gas tank to the fuel pump and to the carburator.

Check fuel filters when you are checking the fuel lines.

Remove the fuel line from the carburator and verify the fuel pump is pumping gas. Use a clear plastic bottle or glass bottle to catch the gas in fuel line while someone cranks over the engine. be careful of any spark or backfiring in carb.

Try using gasoline instead of starting fluid and see if it still tries to start.

Then do all the things mentioned above.
