hard upshift 1,2 only

i have a 97 f150 , 4.2L,recently i took my motor out to fix a bent rod,thats another story, anyway i got it all back together and now i have this hard 1,2 upshift ,then smooth after that. i had it on a jack for a couple of weeks when i had the motor out , i checked the u joints ,the one on the trans end has a little play by grabbing the yoke the other is tight . anyone with any ideas please holler at me .
