Hello i am new to this site so bare with me.. Umm my question is i am 16 and i am looking at ford rangers and would like some opinions. first off i already know i want the 4.0 extended cab straight drive 2wd! Now my questions are what kinda gas mileage would it get with 3.55 gears. And what size trailer would i be able to pull because i ride dirt bikes and pull a 6x12 box trailer and it weights loaded about 2 tons i am sure it would pull it but i worry about stopping it! Also i want one in the area of a 1996-1998 what should i give for a truck of that age?? THANKS ALOT GUYS!!!!
You might want to do a search in this forum on the gas mileage thing, there is a really longgggggg thread on the subject. I *think* you'll be ok pulling a trailer as you noted. On the price, they vary depending on what part of the country you live in as well as condition. I'd start by looking in local papers, kbb, nada, and edmunds.
*Be aware that these vehicles take a pretty good hit on trailer weight if you get a manual tranny. You're a smart guy for thinking about stopping it; most people stop thinking about things after they get it moving.

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but why do manual trannys take a hit on tow weight? Is it just too hard on the clutch getting it moving? I think it would be easier to stop in a manual though because you can use engine braking.
What, i never heard about bad gaskets, and i fail to have a problem with mine. even with my increased performance.
/personal unhijacking
anywho with the exception of the gasket problem previously discussed the 97 ranger doesn't give me no crap. i have the 4wd model extended cab 4.10's. if you have time for it i'ld put disk brakes in the rear. then you'ld be sure of stopping it.
A few questons bout your trailer(s): What kind of braking system do you have? how many tires? and finally. Where do you keep all the weight? aka ballanced or front heavy
If you go with a 96 or 97 the price would fall in around 5,000 +/- 750 for what you want.
A 98 will go around 7,000.
they have no trade in value, so once you get it, your gonna drive it till it dies. because you wont get anything back on it. but they are hard to kill.
Alan D, The trailer is a 6x12 single axel with no trailers breaks and yeah we load two bikes in the front and one in the back and it doesnt put a whole lot on the tounge but that is with a chevy 1500 2wd pulling it! Do you think i should go with the manuel or the auto since i would be pulling a trailer. Also would 2 or 4wd be better i live in the mountains of north carolina and it does snow here.
4x4 is allways better if you can get it, it's one of those things you may never use, but the one time you need it, it can be worth it's weight in gold. Also pulling a trailer, it doesn't take much to get you spinning after you leave the pavement, a hard rain, sciff of snow, or whatever. Plus if one of your dirt bikes breaks down may be easier to get the truck closer to the bike with 4x4 to retreve it. my dealer told that they lessen the pull weight with a manaul was because of warrenty issues. Alot of ying-yangs are hard enough on the clucth without pulling a trailor yet. If your a good driver, you could get away with a manual, but for ease of towing, and at your age, an auto would probobly be best. Manual's are usally good for a couple more mpg, but compared to the price of a clutch, go auto. Thats hard for me to say, cause I'm a manaul guy, but I really think it would be best for you.
Yeah i am a prety good driver and i can operate a cluch prety descent but if towing is hard on them then i wouold just rather get the auto plus if i break my arm rideing i dont need someone to change gears for me lol!
Go for the munaul. it's easier, and xheaper to fix. the 3.55 woild work fine, just be sure to get all round abs. also you might want to consider putting a disk brake for the rear tires.it's alot better than drums. i got mine off an old expidition i think. the wieght you gonna be pulling is gonna be hard on both trannies, so stick with the ceaper one.
4wd would be nicer. but go for the manual hubs. the auto ones tend to fail (like mine) then you have to get towed out be someone(in my case a meucury sable).
