I have a 2000 Expedition with the 4.6 Romeo and 74000 miles. It is 4wd with the all the time 4wd. I am going to change the diff. fluids and I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion on OEM or aftermarket fluid, also with the rear do you suggest pumping it out or removing the cover. When I took the vehicle to a local Ford dealer to have the fuel filter changed I asked them to grease the chassis, they told me there was only a couple fittings, I said a couple and the salesmen said 2, please tell me the dealer employee is an idiot. The salesmen also advised me that I needed new tie rods, does this sound correct or a give us more money scam. Also besides fluids is there any other maint. that should be done, mechanical.
Thanks for any info.
While some swear by Purple and Amsoil, Ford specs Mercon for the differential so that's what I use in mine. The procedure for the rear is to completely remove the cover then re-set it with silicone. From the factory the Expy's came with two zerks. I've changed out all four ball joints so now I have six. It's not unheard of for tie rods to need replacing at around 75K miles, but it's not the norm. Nevertheless, they are cheap and easy to replace, although you'll need an alignment thereafter.
BTW, you have A4WD which stands for "automatic" 4-wheel drive rather than "all-time" 4-wheel drive. So you actually drive around is 2WD and if rear wheel slippage is sensed, the electronics engage the transfer case/front drive axles.
