i bought my 01 Ford Explorer Sport Trac from a private seller. i never asked the seller for the keyless entry code. how can i reprogram the keyless entry so that i can create my own code.
im not 100% sure... correct me if im wrong... but i think i will need a 5 digit factory code to be able to delete the old one if the seller had one and to be able to creat my own... but where can i find these 5 digits?
Try the sticky at the top of this forum "Links to useful information". There is a link in there to keyless entry codes. There are several places to look for it. I just bought an '03 and searched the vehicle like listed in the forum but I ended up having to bring it back to the dealer and they pulled the code. Luckily for me I bought from the dealer so they did it no charge.
Once you get the factory code you will be able to set "personal codes"...
1> Find the keyless entry module, usually under the dash up above where the accelerator pedal is. The code will be stamped on it's housing (sometimes removal is necessary)
2> Take to the dealer.. they can hook up their scanner and retrieve the code for you.
Keep in mind these two precedure only work if you have FACTORY INSTALLED keyless entry. If it is an add-on feature the codepad is battery operated and is recognized by the car as a FOB (the remote thingy that you carry on your keychain). If that is the case then it has to be reprogrammed just like a FOB.
My 03 explorer code was on the computer module. Probably the same for you. Also there are people on ebay that sell you the location. Usually cost about 15 bucks. You can program your own code but the factory code will still work.
