quick question about an 04 ranger

a friend of mine put some gl5 in his manual tranny on his 04 but the paperwork called for mercon, how big of a problem could this be?

No problem in the short term. Over the long run, the tranny internals will wear faster. Expect gear grinding when shifting by about 70,000 (personal experience). I know it's hard to accept for us old-school guys, but the transmission has been designed to use Mercon.

reddog99 is right, gear oil is uncompatiable with the internals on our manual tranny's. If he want's better shifting use Amsoil's MTL(?) or Redline's MTF (?) or any synthetic mercon fluid.
