My friend has a '96 3.0 with a rough idle. The CEL was also on and blinked under driving conditions. She took it to the dealer and payed way too much to hear she needed plugs, plug wires, and 02 sensors. Those items have been replaced, and I am told it still idles rough. Battery was disconnected to reset computer and CEL went away for now, but I don't think she has driven it since parts replacement. I told her to drive it and possibly get new codes.
My question is should we clean some intake parts? IAC? Should I use carb cleaner? I read about those items in the forums but I have never had a reason to do it on my Fords.
IAC piston contamination by intake air dust and debris common idle problem
carb cleaner can work....Ford says that IAC is not cleanable, replace only...many on forum have success cleaning....
also remove and soak clean MAF...
how much did dealer charge for plugs, wires and O2's? $800?
Her son-in-law's friend did the parts replacement for over $400 (ouch). I would have done it for beer and a BBQ, but that is what I do for friends. I think the dealer did want about $800.
I will know later today if it was taken to Autozone for codes, and will post results when I get them.
No codes yet. I was told it runs rough on and off but more so after the truck is warmed up, and the CEL is back on, so I told her to get to the store and run codes.
