Power Steering Woes

Today I bought two nice shiny remanufactured parts. A power steering pump intended for a 76 lincoln continental (donor 460 motor), and a box intended for a 78 F250 2WD. (My truck is 4WD, but i like the 2wd box so I can run my drag link behind the front axle.)

I hooked everything up and started the engine. The pump pumped fluid through the system and out the return line.

After making sure the fluid level was good, I hopped in the truck to work on bleeding the system.

As soon as I touched the wheel it began shaking violently, first left then right, so hard I couldnt stop it.

After this I put the front tires in the air to try again. No more shaking, but it turns whichever way it wants to and theres nothing I can do about it.

A leak has sprung up where the shaft that connects to the steering column enters the steering box.

Could the pump be two powerful? It has bungs for two return lines but my pump can only use one.

Maybe this is air in the system and the shaking caused the leak?

What should I do?

Thanks.

Turns out I had the pressure and return lines backward. The lincoln I got the pump and the hoses from used a 5/16 for return, and a 3/8 for pressure. The truck is the opposite. Bizarre.

Works great now. Can turn my 38s while sitting still with one finger.
