Fan needs to be replaced

I'm going to replace my fan tommorow, it was cracked when I got it and I figure I should replace it before it makes a big bang. '94 4.0L, anything special to watch out for? Seems simple to me.

My father's 4.0L ('91) had to use a fan clutch removal wrench to remove it.
He was also just wanting to get the fan off. But the design of this particular (OEM?) fan/clutch wouldn't allow him to simply take the fan off.

Maybe the '94s also had to use the slim fan clutch wrench too?

Be aware of which direction you need to turn it ... ??

Warning: some of the big nuts are left hand thread. You can use one of those flexy rubber wrenches to hold the pulley still while you loosen the clutch.

Flexy rubber wrenches? As redneck as I am, I have no idea what that is lol.

Looking at the Haynes, the big nut holding it on is a reverse thread (I assume to keep the engine from tossing it while running).

Other than that is looks pretty easy, but yeah the clutch has to come with it, and I then have to remove the clutch.

Commonly called a strap wrench.

I guess I'll have to buy one of those, I don't seem to see one anywhere in our tool inventory.

Since your truck is a stick, put it in 5th (with emergency brake on) and you should be able to break the nut free. The fan & fan clutch should then come loose from the water pump.

What will that do Bob? I don't doubt your logic, just wondering how exactly that will help me, since it seems to me I'd be pushing against the compression of the engine, which would be constant, and in first gear the engine would turn less before the tires and the rest of the drivetrain would stop it?

I'm missing something.

No, 5th gear will load your engine more, your engine will turn more in the lower (numerical) gears. The engine compression alone will not be enough to break the nut loose. The only thing you will have to worry about is your belt slipping on the water pump pully.

Oh ok good to know, thanks Bob.

Ok O'Reilly Auto Parts, where we usually get out stuff, doesn't stock a fan for the Ranger. Autozone has a "Dorman Plastic Only" fan for $37.99, any comments on that? I'd go to the stealership but I know I'm gonna get killed on the price.

*Scratches head* oh i get it. you want to use the parking brake to hold the part instead of the engine compression. i dount he'll be able to turn it over. 180 horses is alot for one guy to make.

Lol isn't that the truth. If I do I'll be sure to let you guys know lol.

As soon as somebody says yay or nay to the fan I'm gonna go pick it up (or not...lol).

Actually, it's about torque and not 160 HP. There is also a good chance that he can simply position the old fan properly then simply hold it and remove the fasteners. What I mean by position properly will become self evident one he get's in there, looks at it, then attempts to breat them free.

I can't figure this out guys...the Haynes is absolutely useless, and looking at the fan itself I can't see a good way to remove anything. The big nut immediately behind the fan is in so tight I can't get any kinda of wrench in there.

What am I missing, is that the right one to remove? Or maybe the four small ones?

Huh? You've just got to be kidding me.....haynes doesn't cut it ? .

Here's the real deal bud; go in there, remove whatever you need to gain access to the fasteners, then get creative in accessing the bolts for removal. It's a matter of looking at the big picture up front (and that don't include some book made by an underwear company), thinking about what you need to do to get to the component being replaced, and just doing it. About the only thing I would use the underwear manual for (other than setting it in an outhouse somewhere) would be the bolt torque, but given the quality of haynes even that might be in question. Therefore, I'd simply use gut instinct on that one and forget about looking in any book, period.
