Well first let me start off with what I have. A 1986 F-250 6.9L It has about 98000 miles on it and I seem to have a leak somewhere on the passenger side it doesn't look like it's from the valve covers. I am new to diesels so i'll try and explain it the battery lead comes down to what I think is a starter and then there is a larger cylinder just below that with a triangle bolt pattern there is a lot of what I believe to be oil leaking out of there when the truck is shut off after running. I have no idea if this is a seal issue or a loose bolt pattern someting like that also the oil pressure guage never reads very high I don't know if this is related. Any help would be appreciated. If anyone knows of any good manuals too that would be helpfull I have the haynes for the fords. Thanks
welcome aboard the forum ...
make sure you are in fact dealing with oil and fuel oil leaks. the engine is designed to have a drain for the top valley pan. This pan is located between the cylinder heads on top of the engine and catches all that leaks. Look over the valley pan and make sure that is dry. If you are getting raw fuel smell while operating the truck, you may have a fuel system return leak and it is showing up on the bottom from the drain. You may also have a head gasket leak and showing up on the bottom or a valve cover leak. The starter is located on the passenger side of the engine bell housing ... the bigger round deal with a smaller round deal on top of it, the solenoid which activates the starter.
let us know what you discover after the examination.
The best way to start looking for a leak, is to first take it to a self service car wash (pressure washer) or use or barrow a pressure washer. With the engine warm and shut down, start washing it down. Start at the top and make sure you clean all the way around the valve covers on both sides, clean down around the injection pump(center top of engine below air cleaner) be careful not to spray directly into the air cleaner a little mist or over spray is okay just be aware of where it is. Then crawl under the truck and continue to spray the bottom of the engine, your going to get dirty but thats part of it.
Most likely the oil is coming from the valve cover, way back by the plastic heater assembly near the fire wall, the only way you can find it is to feel back there with your hand after driveng the truck, its too far back to see, you mite get a peak at that area by looking over the tire if you inner fender flap is gone.
But when the motor is clean it will be easier to trace the leak where-ever it is coming from
Sounds like your cylinder ??? may be the manual lift pump, it can leak either fuel or oil. Replacement is slightly difficult but can be done..........
This info pertains to Carter #M60278 pump or new long arm style.
WARNING
This fuel pump must be installed only at the low position of actuator cam.
If the pump is installed at any other position than low cam, the pump will be ruined, the engine will stall and damage may result.
Incorrect installation will loosen the pivot pin and allows the pin and lever to come out of the pump and drop into the oil pan. This can occur immediately or after several hundred miles. This type of failure is not covered by warranty.
To ensure that the cam is at low position, it is necessary to use a mirror and a remote starter switch. Observe the cam through the mounting port and bump the engine around until a one (1) inch wide machine surface is observed. This is low position of the cam. Now complete normal fuel pump installation.
If you decide to wash a warm engine be carefull not to get any cool water on the injection pump, the tolerances in it are so close that a quick temp change could ruin the pump.
Well I cleaned everything and started the truck drove it around for about 20 min drove a little better came back and let it sit like always and no leak. I'm shure it's still there but I layed under that truck for 20 min and it never started to leak I checked all the valve cover bolts and the square bolt under that on both sideds and they were all tight. I'll check it tomorrow but it shure would be nice to have fixed it with just a cleaning. Any other Ideas are always welcome I'll let you know what I find tomorrow.
