92 explorer problems
what should i look for as in problems? what mods can i do to it?
and what's the max tire size in stock form
Suspension, other than spring under in the rear, is essentially the same as your BII. Check the usual, including the radius arm bushings. No real problems other than the usual bushings and sometimes alignment issues that are hallmarks of Ford's TTB front end.
Engine (4.0 OHV V6) is a good little engine. Not many real problems with it when it's taken care of.
Transmission (A4LD automatic, M5OD manual). A4LD can have problems, make sure it is in tip top shape. If it needs a rebuild, get a good rebuild. M5OD seems to be pretty trouble free in this application.
4WD drivetrain (if equipped). BW-13-54 t-case is pretty solid. Electric shift mechanism tends to develop troubles, but can usually be resolved/prevented by cleaning the shift motor. If it still has auto hubs, they tend to have problems.
"What mods can I do to it?" What kind of mods do you want? The 4.0 OHV has some aftermarket support, but not a lot. You can get locker/limited slips for front and rear if you want. Lift/lowering kits seem readily available.
"What's the max tire size in stock form?" I've got 31x10.5R15's on my '92. I get a little bit of rubbing in the driver's wheel well at full left turn (It would rub on the sway bar if it was installed). If I were willing to tolerate the rubbing, I could probably get 32's under there. Most people feel that 31's are as big as you can go in stock form, though it can vary from vehicle to vehicle. With the Firestone debacle, sometimes it's more a question of what your tire shop is willing to put on. Some refuse to install anything larger than the stock 235/75R15's.
