Resetting Engine Codes

Maybe I am not putting the right words into the search but I can't find any info on how to reset the engine codes, specifically the check engine light, on my 97 X without having to go get a scanner. I seem to remember there was a way to do it but can't seem to find it now.

I don't believe you can reset the engine codes without using a scan tool. I'm not sure if disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes will work, but this may be worth a try.

Yes disconnecting the battery will work. Leave it disconnected for at least 5 minutes.

Check codes, fix problem if not done already....

Then pull ECU fuse in underhood box for a moment, then replace,

Presto.

Another thing you can do is just drive it. Eventually, the computer will recognize the fact that it has been repair and will clear the light all by itself. That way you'll KNOW it's fixed. Might take a couple hundred miles of driving though.
