Tips for for auto hubs
As I was driving on the freeway the other day, I couldn't help but notice the front driveshaft rotating on another SD that drove by. It only took a fraction of a second to realize what was wrong, and thought I would pass along a small but useful piece of info for others. Some, just like this guy, may not even know that a problem exists.
Factory "auto" hubs are known for getting stuck in the locked position. This is due to dirt and grime build up, and the fact that the new hubs really don't seal very well. ( that big snap-ring is not very tight). Most of us think that when we turn the hub back counter clockwise (after wheelin ), It's all over with, and never verify that it is truly unlocked.
To help keep the elements out, I keep the botttoms of a small plastic beverage bottle. I cut the bottom of the plastic bottle(s), and slip them over the front hub. (cut the bottle long enough to cover the entire hub). This does a pretty good job of sealing the hub. I now only take the hub apart once a season with little sign of dirt or moisture.
The real fix is to replace the lockout assembly (as I have done on the SD.) But for those of us that are still runnin the original stuff. Try this, it's cheap, and it works.
