Well, as a proud owner of a 2001, the only known possible problem could be the transmission. Ford changed the one-way clutch 4R100 that year and quickly changed it back to the sprag OWC once they realized the severity of the problem they'd created. Mine was one that was affected by the mechanical diode. It ended up costing me about $3800 for a replacement tranny, but somehow I felt I should have gone aftermarket. It only affected transmissions built between a certain date so, other than that, you have a rock solid vehicle.
Those 7.3's are known to have failing CPS's (Can Position Sensor) so it is always a good idea to have one handy...along with the 10mm socket required to change it out.

How did you pay that much? It cost me $4200 for a BTS Trans plus install.
I unfortunately went with a Ford Reman; so it was about $3800 parts and labor with a 3yr/36K warranty. Either a BTS or an ATS is what I'll be looking into once I'm able to raise the necessary funds.
and the drivers heated seat grid, and the crappy ford hubs, and the cheesy door lock actuators---oh did i fail to mention the 17.8 average mpg on the lie-o-meter on a 372 mile round tripper thru the mountains of west by god virginia at a brisk pace?
We have an 02 Ex 4x 7.3 Limited, LOVE it, just went on a 3700 mile trip, averaged 18.7 for the whole trip mpg, 20 and 22 in the flats running about 74 mph. I do have the Hypertech 3 stage programmer, K&N Intake, and straight pipe (sounds so good) exhaust.
