REBUILD time.........
The symptom: After startup, I hear an occasional sound that reminds me of a man hole cover grating against the ground. This sound occurs at idle, and about 1/3 of the time. During cruise, it is not audible...I'm not stupid- it sounds to me like I've "spun" a bearing~
Now, my other car, and the one that I spend the most time on [and that HappyTruck occasionally hauls parts for...] Is a Porsche 928. I posted something on Rennlist.Com, which is the PLACE for these cars, describing what Dearborne's finest was doing, and the response was nearly universal- spun bearing = rebuild time.
-Actually, I got more than one "Oh yeah, I had one of those, they are great"'s from people there.
On said German sports car, a rebuild of its rare 4 cam V8 can cost upwards of $8000...How much do you folks think it will cost to "do" HappyTruck's motor? I am thinking that since my job in the airlines takes up nearly all my time, that I will not just have it rebuilt but mounted as well. I am amenable to installing short blocks, and a 300 is desired, if I am pulling it apart anyway.

It also comes down to "how much time/money do wish to part with?" I assisted a buddy of mine a while back who "spun" a bearing on his "other brand" truck. In an evening and a case of beer, we dropped the iol pan and went at it with the motor in the truck. The cement was a little cold on the back, but the outcome was cheap and relatively easy, and he was off to work in the morning with a refreshed engine. Of course a little more time spent would have been nice, but there were no additional problems with that engine.
BTW-I have always liked the 928, oddly enough I was hoping that would be my next toy to play with...

Anyway if it did spin a bearing and your still driving it you've done damage to the crank for sure and depending on if its a rod bearing or a main bearing you've toasted the block or at least one rod.
IMOP you'd be better off to trade in your motor on a reman.

I was hoping to keep the cost below $1000, since this is basically the value of the truck. The vehicle itself is quite serviceable, with only minimal rust. The rustoleum paint job was a solution to a problem from a few years ago, and actually gets quite a few compliments [every panel is a different color, a la Partridge Family!]. This thing appears above the fray, gives everyone a smile, and gets as much attention as the 928.
N!
PS- The 928 is a great car, and cheap too- though not cheap to maintain, unless you are good with a set of tools!
