hey all i ran into a problem today i bought a set of wheels off my buddy not shur of brand but they are 16.5x9.75 when i went to put them on my 77 highboy i ran out of stud they are so close but still cant get a lug to thread i noticed that the wheels are thicker than the other ones so my question is do i have to get longer studs put in or is there a special lug out there that i can buy please help thanks!
Rob:
You must have purchased an alloy wheel of some type. It is important that you install with the proper "shank style" lug nut. Jeg's (sponsor) sells them for $9.99 pkg. (4). The shank style nut has a shoulder, that inserts into the wheel to fill up that gap around the lug. Using the wrong lug nuts here could result in bad things. (although, I doubt you could even thread anything other that the right nut on there.) Check out their website, you can see pics, and order at the same time.
What ever you do MAKE SURE the correct lugs are installed.
My story is to long but I will say that my towing bill, the new wheel, disassembly of one side of a front 4X4 axel to replace four sheared off studs and an unscheduled night in beautiful downtown Goldendale Wa. was nothing…………… compared to what could have happened if I hadn’t pulled over because "something didn’t feel right". If I hadn’t stopped, my buddy and I would still be in the bottom of a steep canyon under the hunting trailer we were towing.
Lucky for me the tire company that put on the wrong lugs (to long and bottomed before tight to the wheel) paid for everything including a complete set of wheels.
I just purchased some new alloy 8 lug wheels for my '79 F250. What a pain to find the correct nuts! My truck has 1/2" studs, the wheel stud holes are .685 or about 11/16". I found some mag shank nuts with washers at Checker Auto Parts (aka Kragen, Parts America, Shucks and I think one other name). These are too long so I am in the process of cutting the shank down to the right length. None of the tire shops around here had any nuts beyond the standard beveled end type. Gorilla Automotive has some that look like they would work however finding a supplier who has them in stock was not easy. I need these on in the next couple of days so I'm going ahead with the ones I have. I'll post more when I'm done.
