I've been thinking about a preluber for quite a while, I'm thinking of bringing the power off of the glow plug relay, so the prelube pump automatically comes on when the glow plugs are activated with maybe a 3 position manual override switch (off/on/auto) on the dash. I think it will work for me, but might not work so well for someone in a hotter climate. What do you guys think, any deleterious side effects from this setup?

There's pumps on e-bay right now that I think would work well for this application, I'm a little reluctant to say but it's e-bay item number: 230011569950. There's 5 of them for sale in a dutch auction if you guys are interested ther should be enough to go around, tell me what you think about the pump. If you guys buy all of these pumps out from under me, I won't tell you my secrets anymore.

What kind of hose did you use (type and size), where did you find the check valve, did you just put in a two position on-off switch, and lastly where did you mount the pump? Got any pictures????
I used 3/8" high pressure oil hose, because of the durability of the outer skin of the hose, and I used all 3/8" fittings except for the pipe nipple into the filter housing. I also put a quick disconnect on the hose that runs from the pump to the filter so I could drain my oil without having to disturb the banjo fitting on my oil pan. I used a check valve that I got at work, I will find out a part number or something for you, It has a fairly light spring, I think we got it from Grainger. I did use a 2 pos. switch to operate a "ford" type solinoid for the motor. I mounted it (the pump/motor), directly beneath the drivers seat on the frame rail. I mounted the solinoid on the passenger side firewall, (like the old ford solinoids). It works great! They say that for every dry start it cost about 500 operational miles. Not sure if that is accurate or not, but it makes me feel good when I use it! I will take some pics for you this weekend.

I thought about that too, but the pump takes a little while to pick up and build pressure, and I was affraid to rob any power from the glowplugs. If you do it, let us know how it works for you.

i know a company that makes an oil precharger here is a quote from the website:

oil pre-charger which puts an end to potential dry-engine starting. Typically, an engine that has sat for even a short period of time will operate relatively dry upon starting before oil is able to fully lubricate the system. The precharger operates as an engine oil reservoir, charged under pressure directly from the oil pump output during normal engine operation. Upon turning the ignition key to the on position, up to 160 cc’s (5.4 oz.) of oil are discharged from the reservoir to engine surfaces, building oil pressure and providing vital lubrication.

Eliminates dry starts, reduces engine wear
Retrofit with Dual Remote Filtration System
Compact design, mounts at every angle
Ideally suited for gas & diesel applications
Capacity to pre-lube up to 500 CID (8.2L) engines
Promotes easier starts in extreme cold weather
Closed system prevents contamination
Self Lubricating, no maintenance required
Operational cycle life exceeds 1,000,000 engine starts
Install and forget

That pump looks to me to be the perfect pump....I really like the pressure adjustment feature on it. I think I am going to bid on one if the price doesn't get too high. I have a 24 volt rv water pump I was going to use but this looks like a much better setup.

Concerning the availability of commercial pre/post lubers...there are a number of companies that make them...BUT this is one of those mods that we can make for ourselves at a fraction of the cost and construct it as just as good (or better) as the commercial units. I much prefer doing a mod myself than just buying something made by a company and slapping it on...more fun doing it myself IF I can do it just as well.

amsoil. if you go to their website click on product info then on oil prechargers. they have a unit for their bypass system, and one you can install without their system.
i just pulled my catalog and looked at the price msrp 400, being a preferred customer my price would be 348

How about using the glow plug relay to energize a relay which would then provide the power to the prelube pump? The second relay would be tied direct to the battery and "triggered" by the energizing of the glow plug relay...

Lets see, build my own system for under $100, or pay amsoil $400? Hmmmmm...........I'm gonna have to think about that one for a while...............

Thanks for the great info. The unit I had on my heavy truck would not let the starter engage unless the oil pressure came up to a certain PSI (40 psi if I remember correctly). I called a buddy who has one on his tractor and he said that they have now integrated the preluber into the starter!!! I'll be looking for the photos and thanks in advance!
