a4ld all wheel drive

I have a 92 4.0 v6 with all wheel drive I need to replace the a4ld tranny. Can I use a two wheel drive tranny and simply swap the rear housing from the 4 wheel tranny to the two wheel tranny.

I would like to know this as well, But I need to go from a 91 awd to a 90 2wd, both are 4.0 engines.

Not without problems down the road. The outer cases are the same but the E-4WD/4.0L internals are stronger than 2WD versions. You can buy transmission upgrades for the 2WD versions.

I do know that as long as they both come out of a 4.0 then they have the stronger tranmission and if you rebuild there are even sturdier parts avaliable. I just need to know if I can just swap the rear housing so I can attach it to the transfer case. The van has a lot of miles so I really just need a tranny that will go for awhile the old girl already has 215,000 miles on it.

In theory, yes they should swap. I believe there are slight differences between the analog and digital equipped versions at the speedometer drive. One uses a cable and the other a speed sensor. Whether they will adapt easily, I do not know.
