air filter minder question

How many miles does an air filter last before it must be changed. The filter minder hasn't moved at all since we bought it new in 2004. 50,000 miles seems kind of long for a filter. We don't live in the cleanest environment, either. We kick up quite a dust cloud at times. Could the minder be stuck? I haven't noticed a decrease in porformance, but I want to catch it before it causes major issues.

Time to change will vary with each individual. Like you said, the environment you drive in plays a role in when you should change it. If it were me, with 50K on the clock, I'd change it out wether I think it needed it or not.

I noticed the same issue and wondered the same thing. I have 37,000 miles on mine and haven't seen the filter minder move or the dash light come on. In Utah it is very dry and dusty and I began to worry that my filter minder just does not work. Maybe Ford service had been resetting it each time I took it in? Who knows, I don't know why they would do that. I also noticed that the reset did not do anything to my filter minder.
I decided to replace it last weekend before my camping trip and it was quite dirty. However, I read that these filters can hold almost two pounds of dirt!

I don't know if it made a difference or not. I am monitoring for MPG improvement. It seems with a dirty filter the MPG would suffer.

First, the filter minder isn't a cumulative device - it measures instantaneous vacuum and records the peak value. So, if the filter's clogged and you reset it, the next time you romp on the engine, the minder will go back to indicating a clogged filter.

The book sez every 30K miles or when necessary (unless you're using one of the severe-duty schedules) for the air filter. I'm at 28K now and my filter minder hasn't moved... I still plan to replace the filter at 30K.
