I changed my fuel filter yesterday and it was black as coal. After doing a search, I found that is pretty normal after about 15000 miles. However I remember reading that if your injector o rings were bad that would also turn the fuel filter element black. So my question is, at what interval should I change my filter to find out if those o rings need replaced? (Just turned 286000)Thanks in advance
I dont know about the injectors but I change my fuel filter every 15k and it has never been black. Its always been a greenish, the same cooler as the fuel. Good luck.

Me too, but mine is the other Christmas color usually. This is the first I have ever heard of black. You putting your used crankcase oil in the fuel tank by any chance?
Don't be to concerned with the element being black. The purpose of the filter is to filter out dirt, debris, etc. so it will get dirty or black. I don't think I have ever changed one that wasn't black. You should question the injector o-rings if your oil level in the oil pan is dropping. We normally change them every 10K, or twice a year. The service manual states that you can go 15K between intervals.
Thanks for the replies...I guess I'll just change the filter more often, they are cheap enough at FleetFilter. I'll try and find the thread about injector o rings and black fuel filter though.
I just discovered something in my fuel filter, and tjbeggs totally hooked me up. My fuel filter was black and looked to be greasy. Literally greasy. I posted in the OBS forum and tj told me it was algae. Apparently that is common. I was never aware of it. I'm currently treating it with Power Service Slime X part #9225. But I too thought injector O rings. But he said if it's greasy it's algae. Who knew? Anyway hopefully you just have algae and not bad o rings. Good luck. Theres a whole thread in the OBS forum under Black Fuel Filter. Later.
