I am getting ready to take the top off to go the the beach, and i was wondering if there was any good way to remove the plugs that go over all of the screw holes. I have already broke most of them on the tailgate and want to keep the ones on the inside of the truck nice. thanks
Careful prying with a needle-nose pliers or a GM window crank removal tool has worked well for me but still not without a few casualties. They just get brittle with age and the repeated exposure to extreme temperature changes. They can be replaced but finding them is a challenge sometimes.
just got back from the auto store and looked at the tools. i found a tool that was made just for this purpose and it was 20 bucks. needless to say, the tool wasnt purchased.
Thanks for posting this question. I have the same problem. I want to take my top off butt the friggin plugs over my screw holes are dry rotted and break off every time I try to take one off. My question is, can they be replaced with a screw of some sort?
You can replace 'em with anythng you way. They only hold the trim to the body. As was mentioned earlier, if you end up like many of us, the trim won't find its way back into the truck very often anyway once you make the decision to remove the top.
Yea Dont Worry Bout The Trim Once You Take Yer Top Off Your Gonna Love It And Do It Everytime It's Nice Out. Chk Out My Gallery. Updated It With My Top Off...hehe..snap N Roll!
Actually My '83 Not Only The Trim Is Gone But So Are All The Bolts Except Two , The Center One Above The Cab To Keep It Up Tight Of Coarse, And A Little One Driverside Rear Corner To Achor It Frm The Side To Side Affect, Dont Know If I Did This Because I Was Lazy Of Just Lost The Bolts. Hehe, Was Lazy, Took That Top Off All The Time Solo Too! Take Bolts Off Jump Inside Put Back Against Roof Lift Slightly To Get The Front Part Ovr Lip Jump Out Stand On Bumper Slide Back Slowly N Evenly Till It Would See-saw On Edge, Jump Off Pull Down Let Cap Ride Back Of Bed Down Must Done Slowly N Evenly To The Ground Hold Onto Cap With It Leaning Against Trk Get Inside It, Back Against Roof And Hands Above You Against The Lip Your Bolts Go Through Pick Up And Walk (waddle Its Heavy) To Where U Want It. Its A Bitch But Can Be Done. Wouldnt Recommend To Do With Nice Paint
Good You Dont Wanna Be Unsnapn And Rolling It Up In The Cold Though, Be To Brittle. Plus If You Keep It Rolled Up Ovr Nite Lets Say And It Gets Cold, Leave It Alone Till It Get Warmer Cause The Tarp Actually Shrinks.

I'll offer another opinion for what it's worth. I found it to be too much work to remove the top, and once off....big deal...the driver (me) is still under a roof, the back seat riders get to ride topless. I put mine back on and it's never coming off again.
Like I said just another opinion.
